Heating, especially air conditioning, is generally the biggest contributor to monthly expenses. While this is almost always the case, it is especially true if your HVAC system isn’t working efficiently. For that reason, we’ve developed this guide with tips for improving HVAC efficiency.

1. Schedule a Spring and Fall Tune-up

The best way to ensure your heating and air conditioning continue working is to have your HVAC system professionally serviced. You can schedule an AC tune-up in the spring and a heating tune-up in the fall. Regular maintenance allows an HVAC system to work more efficiently, lessening the strain on the system and minimizing its energy consumption.

2. Check for Leaks in Your Ductwork

Ductwork leaks can be one of the main contributors to energy waste and can decrease the efficiency of an HVAC system by 20-30% or more. Scheduling yearly ductwork inspections is important and why you should have all your ducts resealed at least every decade or so.

3. Remember To Change the Air Filter

A dirty air filter will also significantly reduce HVAC efficiency since it restricts how much air the system can circulate. You should generally replace the air filter at least every two months. However, you should change your air filters monthly if you live in dry, dusty climates and own pets.

4. Program Your Thermostat

Leaving your thermostat set to the same temperature all day and night is never recommended. Instead, you should program your thermostat to where the temperature turns up or down at specific times, such as when you’re asleep and at work. Having your HVAC system run less reduces wear and tear so that it continues working as efficiently as possible and experiences fewer issues.

5. Install a Smart Thermostat

An even better option than simply programming your thermostat is to upgrade your HVAC system with a smart thermostat. Many smart thermostats can essentially program themselves after learning about your normal routines. A smart thermostat also enables you to monitor your HVAC system energy usage, which makes it easy to adjust the thermostat settings to improve efficiency and lower your energy bills even more.

6. Make Sure All Vents and Registers Open and Unobstructed

Another important tip is to regularly go around your home and ensure all return air vents and supply registers are fully open and not blocked or obstructed by furniture. Closed vents and registers always make an HVAC system work less efficiently since they block airflow. It can also cause the blower to use more energy to move air around your home.

7. Keep the Area Around Your Outside Unit Clear

The AC condenser or heat pump outside a home must constantly have sufficient air flowing for your air conditioning to work efficiently. You should regularly check to ensure no leaves or debris are clogging the sides of the unit or piling up around it. You must also keep bushes, grass, and other vegetation trimmed at least two feet from the unit.

8. Make Use of Your Blinds and Curtains

Opening and closing your blinds and curtains can help you better control the temperature in your home so your AC or heating doesn’t need to work as hard. In the winter, you should keep all window coverings open during the day so that you can take advantage of the sun’s heat and keep your home warmer. In the summer, you should keep your windows covered during the day to minimize this heat gain and help your home stay cooler.

9. Keep Windows Closed All Summer

In humid climates like Missouri, you should never open your windows for more than a few minutes during the summer. Any open windows will allow lots of moisture inside and make your AC less efficient. Air conditioning is less effective and cools more slowly in humid indoor conditions than when the air is drier.

10. Run Kitchen and Bathroom Exhaust Fans

Cooking and bathing can quickly make your home hotter and more humid since both release heat and moisture. Running the exhaust fans in your kitchen or bathroom will pull all that heat and moisture outside to lessen the strain on your AC system.
